Water conservation by Tribal People

Dalmeridi Village of Shibapadar GP of Muniguda Block is 13 km away from the Block Headquarters in Rayagada District, Odisha. 20 Tribal families resides in this village which is located down the hills.


Every year, during the wet weather, the rainwater from the hills flows into the village pond. As a result of which, the pond was getting buried with sand, which was causing a disruption in irrigation process. After due discussion with the villagers, decision was taken to build a 2 Gully Plugs in the way of the water flow.

With the support of Goonj, New Delhi all the inhabitants of the village together came forward to build the Gully Plugs. Within a span of two days, by working for 7 hrs a day, jointly they built 2 Gully Plugs at the way of water flow. Size of first gully plug is 23 feet long and 2.5 feet wide which had a slope of 3 feet towards both the sides.


Also the size of 2nd gully plug is 11 feet length and 3 feet wide which had 2.5 feet slope towards both the sides.


Their strong will-power and hard work helped them construct the Gully Plugs. Soil erosion was checked due to this initiative which prevented sedimentation. People are now able to use the pond for their daily requirements. Also more than 8 acres of agricultural land will be irrigated after this renovation of this land. After this Initiative village people also asked local administration for the depending of the pond.
